FIRE OUTBREAK COST IWUOKPOM VILLAGE 80MILLION NAIRA

Iwuokpom people are once again on the boil. This time not from the pollution cause by oil spillage from ExxonMobil but by serious fire outbreak from the YORUBA SETTLEMENT of the village otherwise known as YORUBA QUARTERS.

On Wednesday October 1st, 2008, on this fateful day, when Nigerians were celebrating her 48th Independent Anniversary, the inhabitant of Iwuokpom, a riverine community in Ibono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State were wallowing in pains and agony as a result of serious damages cause by fire-outbreak that burnt down twelve (12) houses and household properties which amount to 80Million Naira (USD683, 761).
“I was on my way to the house when I saw flames but before I get to the location, over ten houses were destroyed, concerned people were putting all their effort into making sure that they quench the fire. On reaching there and discovering that all my properties were gone, I fainted due to the shock of losing my fishing net, engine, money and fishes. I can’t believe that I have lost over six (6) Million Naira (USD51, 282) in a day, how and were will I start again? This was claim by Mr. David Edet
This fire which started at about 15hrs GMT (3PM) left a lot of people devastated. When the Press Unit of “De SUPREME SOLIDARITY ASSOCIATION (DSSA)” visited the area, can you believe that, this Community which host ExxonMobil, there was no rescue team sent there.
Mr. Andrew alleged that such incident has been happening without help from Government and Corporate bodies’ etc. saying that five month ago, three houses was destroy completely by fire without rescue or aide to the victim. He also claims that he lost properties worth Two Million Eight Hundred Thousand (2.8M) Naira (USD23, 932), and that Government have forgotten about their welfare, but are interested in the resources from their land.
Helen Wale a mother of five (5) children, lost everything she has ever work-for, because of this, she was in serious coma. Mr. Anthony who was seriously in pains said his fishes worth Four Hundred Thousand Naira (₦400,000.00) and Nine Hundred Thousand Naira (₦900,000.00) cash sum which was for settlement of his workers.
When DSSA visited the incumbent Executive Youth President of Iwuokpom, Comrade Patrick Joseph Akpan in his speech, he said, “The Government has forgotten about us, they have forgotten about Ibeno Local Government Area partially in the sense that, they only know Ibeno due to her contribution to the nation economy and forgetting about the people’s welfare”.
Mr. Patrick who assumes office on September 12th, 2008 told DSSA that they have been facing situation like this without any assistant from anybody. He accused ExxonMobil saying that, they are contributing to the suffering of the people of Ibeno. In his speech he said, “ExxonMobil is a curse to the people of Ibeno instead of blessing. 98% of the youth are unemployed, they are roaming the street. 90% of the students are without assistance as good numbers of them are dropping out of school due to lack of funds to forward their academic pursuit, but thanks to HEX Chief Godswil Obot Akpabio the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, who recently declare Free Education from Junior Secondary School One (JSS1) to Senior Secondary School Three (SS3). I am calling on the Government, Corporate body, NGO’s, Group and Individual to the aide of this victim who has lost everything.”
